Lost Medicaid? Here’s What To Do

Losing Medicaid is a qualifying life event — it opens a Special Enrollment Period for a Marketplace plan, and many people qualify for subsidies that meaningfully lower the premium.

✓ Your checklist

  1. Act fast — your window is limited (often 60+ days from your end date).
  2. Keep your Medicaid termination letter; it documents the qualifying event.
  3. Estimate this year's household income — subsidies are based on it.
  4. Compare plans with your doctors and medications checked before enrolling.
How Marketplace Subsidies Work

Premium tax credits scale with household income and size. Lower incomes can also unlock cost-sharing reductions — smaller deductibles and copays — but only on Silver plans. Eligibility depends on household income, size, location, and other factors.

✓ Your checklist

  1. Estimate your household MAGI for the coverage year.
  2. Count everyone on your tax return in household size.
  3. If you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, focus on Silver plans.
  4. Report changes promptly to avoid repaying credits at tax time.
Self-Employed Health Insurance

Freelancers and business owners buy through the Marketplace, where premium tax credits based on estimated net income can substantially cut the cost — and self-employed people may deduct premiums at tax time (confirm with your tax professional).

✓ Your checklist

  1. Estimate net self-employment income honestly; you'll reconcile at tax time.
  2. Update your estimate mid-year if business changes.
  3. Compare total cost — premium + deductible + max out-of-pocket.
  4. Ask about HSA-compatible plans for a tax-advantaged cushion.
